Non solo i consumatori, adesso pure gli nematodi sviluppano resistenze al semente MonSanto OGM:
1. Corn rootworm resistance to Bt trait documented in Iowa
Iowa State University entomologist Aaron Gassmann and co-authors have documented western
corn rootworm populations with field resistance to corn hybrids containing the Cry3Bb1 toxin.
This is the first report of field-evolved resistance to a Bt toxin by the western corn rootworm and
by any species of Coleoptera. The complete article is available online at: Gassmann, A.
J., Petzold, J. L., Keweshan, R. S., and Dunbar, M. W. 2011. Field-evolved resistance to Bt
maize by western corn rootworm. PLoS ONE 6(7): e22629. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0022629.
The main points that the authors emphasize are:
• Farmers identified fields with severe rootworm feeding injury on Bt corn.
• Populations of western corn rootworm from those fields displayed significantly higher
survival on Cry3Bb1 corn hybrids in laboratory bioassays than did western corn
rootworm from fields not associated with such feeding injury.
• In all cases, fields experiencing severe rootworm feeding contained Cry3Bb1 corn
hybrids for at least three consecutive years.
• Survival of rootworm populations feeding on Cry3Bb1 corn in bioassays increased with
the number of years that Cry3Bb1 corn had been grown in the field where the populations
were collected.
• These rootworm populations were susceptible to hybrids with the Cry34/35Ab1 toxin,
indicating no cross resistance.
Strano, assolutamente imprevedibile! L’evoluzione! Chi l’avrebbe previsto?
